Department of Surgical Treatment of Acquired Heart Diseases
Chief – Vladimir V. POPOV, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., Honored Doctor of Ukraine.
He works in the Institute since 1978.
He is the author of 357 publications, 13 patents for inventions, 1 monograph,
participant of numerous international congresses,
symposia on cardiovascular surgery.
He is the member of the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine, Europe, USA.
Department performs about 500 operations on the heart and great vessels annually,
more than 400 of which are held under extracorporeal blood circulation such as heart valve replacements,
surgical intervention on the valves, heart oncological surgery,
reconstructive operations on the ascending aorta (hospital mortality is about 3%).
Key areas of the department work :
- myocardial protection;
- bloodless surgery;
- protection of the brain in patients with initial neurological deficit;
- protection of organs in the initial multiple organ failure
(hepatic, renal, pulmonary) and ways of complications prevention;
- complex reconstruction of the mitral lesions
(preservation of valve apparatus during its prosthetic replacement in combination with left atrium plasty);
- combined reconstruction of two or more heart valves;
- replacement of the aortic valve with narrow aortic route;
- reconstruction of the sinotubular junction with poststenotic widening of the ascending aorta
in replacement of the aortic valve;
- valve replacement in patients with diminished myocardial contractility.
